Penistone Gala is all about getting together as a community, enjoying quality time with each other and giving back to local charities and projects
The gala weekend is packed with events for all the family including:
Comedy in a Tent
Jack & Paul’s Fun Run
Mayor’s Parade and Gala.
Penistone Gala History
For over 20 years, volunteers from Penistone Round Table, Penistone Scouts, Penistone Ladies Circle, Penistone Town Council and other local organizations and individuals have organized Penistone Mayor’s Parade and Gala Weekend. Each year it grows in size, popularity and as a spectacle, with people traveling from Barnsley, Huddersfield and across Yorkshire to join the celebrations.
It is tradition that the Mayor of Penistone chooses the theme for the gala. Previous themes have included ‘The Magic of Musicals’, ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Roald Dahl’. This year prepare to be charmed by our magical theme of ‘Fairytales’ selected by 2018/19 Mayor Elect.
Giving Back to the Community
Penistone Gala is not for profit, so any surplus from the weekend is put back into community projects and fund the future of the gala. So, in buying a ticket to one of our events you are helping to support your local community (as well as having a fab day or night out!).
Each of the main volunteer organising groups (Penistone Roundtable, Penistone Scouts, Penistone Ladies Circle and Penistone Mayor’s Charity Fund) receive a donation from the gala, that they in turn pass on to good causes.
Donations from the 2018 gala are supporting projects such as a community lunch for elderly and vulnerable people, Springvale Community Garden, the Dementia Café at St John’s Church, Penistone Leisure Centre, buying new tents for the Scouts, supporting a local brass band to play and raise spirits at community events and much more. Keep an eye on our Facebook page and give us a ‘like’ for updates on our donations.
Love Where You Live
Penistone Gala Weekend is organized and run entirely by local volunteers – who give their time and energy quite simply for the love of their town and community.
Penistone Round Table
A voluntary group (now in its 45th year) for men aged 18-45 that organises community events such as Santa’s Sleigh Run and Penistone Bonfire & Fireworks, as well as supporting and donating to local good causes. Members enjoy a range of social activities and events.
Penistone Ladies Circle
A group of Penistone-based women who meet to organise charity events, fundraise for local groups and socialise. They support with Santa’s Sleigh Run, run the refreshments at Penistone Bonfire & Fireworks, organise the Penistone Boundary Walk and hold a host of social events.
Penistone Scout Group
The Scouts is the UK’s biggest mixed youth organisation. Offering 6 to 25-year-olds fun and challenging activities, unique experiences, everyday adventure and the chance to help others and make a positive impact in communities. With other 300 members across Penistone, scouting has never been so popular.
Penistone Town Council
Penistone Town Council serves Penistone, Springvale, Cubley, Thurlstone, Millhouse Green and Hoylandswaine. There are 15 voluntary Councillors who work hard to ensure residents’ views are represented. The Council also looks after the Community Centre, Resource Centre, Penistone Paramount Cinema and other local sites.
Other volunteers for this year’s gala include:
The 41 Club
Also known as The Association of Ex-Round Tablers’ Clubs, the 41 Club is an organisation for men over the age of 40 to meet and support the community, plus enjoy socialising and local events.
Jack & Paul’s Fun Run
Jack & Paul’s Fun Run is taking place as part of the gala weekend for the first time in 2019. This 2K fun run fundraises for Heads Together, a Barnsley charity that supports families in trauma. It was set up by Claire Throssell in memory of her boys Jack and Paul.
